Leadership

Prayer ChapelLeadership is one of the primary expressions of our mission statement - “We are dedicated to raising up a new generation of Christian leaders.” Our Leadership Team consists of over 360 students who will minister in one of the seventeen specific areas listed on our webpage. Our leaders serve the students at Wesley, the general student body of UGA, as well as the Athens community through a variety of ways. We believe that Leadership gives our students an incredible opportunity to know Christ and make Him known.

Leadership Opportunities for 2010-11 School Year:: (click on name for more info)

  1. Freshmen:  The vision of the Freshmen Ministry is to engage freshmen students in life-changing community. Our desire is to get students connected to a body of believers where they can grow in their walk, experience an authentic faith, learn to share their faith with others, and be transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. We have a service that meets every Monday night from 8:00-9:30, with a separate leadership time from 7:00-8:00. We also host fellowship events, go on a Fall Retreat, and take a mission trip to Jamaica over Spring Break. The Freshmen Ministry is the most time-intensive area of leadership, so be sure that you have the time to commit if you are interested in getting involved. There are 3 ways to get involved with the Freshmen Ministry:

1. Freshmen Small Group Leaders- The small group leaders will lead groups of same-sex
students every Monday night. Responsibilities include being at Wesley every Monday night from 7:00-9:30,
leading a small group discussion, attending fellowship events, meeting with students outside of Monday nights, and
helping out with the retreat and mission trip. We are looking for passionate, mature, and responsible individuals
that have a heart to see freshmen students grow into the person God has called them to be.

2. Freshmen Fellowship- The vision of the fellowship team is to use creativity to build community within the body of the Freshmen Ministry. This will include greeting freshmen on Monday nights as they arrive for the service, creating an inviting environment after the service for students to hang out and get to know one another, hosting and planning fellowship events, blessing the small groups, and serving the body in any way they can. We are looking for creative, outgoing, passionate, responsible people who have a huge heart to serve other

3. Freshmen Prayer- The vision of the Freshmen Prayer team is to cover the ministry and the students in prayer. They will come to Freshmen Leadership from 7:00-8:00, be in the service on Monday nights praying for the body, and then spend time praying while the freshmen are in their small groups. We are looking for passionate individuals that have a heart not only to pray for the students but also a heart to grow in their own prayer life.

  1. Children’s Ministry: The Children’s Ministry ministers to children in the local low income housing community here in Athens.  We work with children ages 5-17.  CrossTrainers, our mentoring program, has over 200 kids paired with over 200 coaches.  CrossTown Kids:  Monday afternoon ministry for elementary aged children of Rockspings and Parkview Housing Communities. We believe that Jesus has a special place in His heart for these kids.  If you would like to help lead this ministry in which we minister to these often overlooked and unloved kids, please sign up!  We need leaders who are committed to our kids and our programs and have a heart to serve.  Anticipated time commitment is 1-2 hours per week.
  1. Prayer:  The prayer ministry exists to provide a prayer covering over Wesley, the campus, and the city.  The purpose is to raise up an army of intercessors who stand confidently in the gap by praying with authority.  Leaders on prayer are given a wide variety of opportunities to learn more about prayer and grow in their personal prayer lives.  Time Commitments are a 2-hour small group each week (Mon. or Tues.) and other weekly prayer activities such as the prayer watch, outreaches, and Friday Night Fires (Prayer meetings on Friday Nights).
  1. Worship

    * Members of the Wednesday night team will be required to attend a weekly small group. Also, the Wednesdays they are assigned to play, they will be required to attend practice at 4:30.
    * The Freshmen team will be required to attend a weekly practice. On Mondays they will arrive at 7:00, lead worship from 8-9 and stay afterwards for small group.
    * There is limited space available for each instrument and position. Therefore, everyone who is interested must attend try-outs.
    * If you are interested in the technical side of a Monday or Wednesday night service (i.e. running sound, lights and powerpoint), that is included in the worship ministry area.

  1. Community Group LeaderBeing a community leader is an opportunity to serve a small group of people through teaching, worship, prayer, and fellowship.  We believe that community groups are at the heart of our ministry here at Wesley.  Time commitments are a Monday or Tuesday meeting each week (plus some planning time with the other leaders) and an occasional leader meeting.
  1. Outreach: The Wesley Outreach ministry is dedicated to developing relationships with students on campus and individuals throughout Athens. We want to create a culture that will “GO.” We want to personally go into the campus and the city and display the love of Christ to anyone the Lord puts in our path. We want our students to walk in confidence and boldness that is given from the Lord, and also understand the power and authority the Lord has given each of them.

Each leader will be involved in weekly outreaches. There will be multiple outreaches for each leader to choose from. We will also have corporate outreaches to the campus and other parts of the city. There will also be monthly meetings with all leaders for us to share testimonies and also have fellowship and pray for one another.

  1. Sparrow’s Nest: The Sparrow’s Nest is a church dedicated to reaching the poor and social outcasts of Athens. The leaders would focus on working with the at risk youth population involved in the Sparrow’s Nest ministry. Leaders would commit to a 1 hour prayer/preparatory meeting with other leaders and volunteers as well as a ministry opportunity throughout the week. These opportunities include, weight training program, tutoring on Wednesday afternoons, youth group on Thursday nights and nursery on Sunday mornings.
  1. Open ArmsOpen Arms is a ministry devoted to sharing the Love of Christ with children with disabilities through games, skits, lessons, and an all-round environment of acceptance.  Time commitments for the leaders are a meeting with the kids from 5:45-7:15 on Thursdays twice a month and a monthly planning meeting.
  1. Women’sThe women’s ministry desires to cultivate a community where women grow in royal identity and friendship with God. Cultivating an atmosphere of love and acceptance, we will learn to walk in freedom, power, and authority, while advancing the Kingdom of God. Anticipating His blessings, we will join together to be transformed from glory to glory.

Leaders of women’s ministry will lead a small group weekly, attend events throughout the semester, and help to plan and facilitate the Women’s retreat. In August, there will also be a special retreat for women’s leadership members.

Redeemed: Redeemed is a non-profit ministry, based under Women’s Minsitry, that branches out of Atlanta reaching out to women in the sex industry. Redeemed was created from a desire for every woman and teenage girl trapped in the sex trade industry to be restored to a place of hope, security, love, and dignity. Redeemed Athens prays for and connects with women involved in the sex for sale industry. We also partner with other ministries here in Athens and in the Atlanta area. Our heart is to connect and share God’s love to those involved. Being part of Redeemed would mean meeting once a week for prayer and planning, along with outreach opportunities. There will be training to better equip our team in working with and understanding women who are in this lifestyle. There are also opportunities for advocacy and raising awareness for the issue of sex trafficking. For more information visit: www.redeemedlove.org

  1. International Student Ministry:  This ministry is geared to reach out to international students.  We work with the international student ministry at Athens First United Methodist Church.  As leadership, you will be paired with an international student to be a ‘friendship partner’.  You will be required to attend a monthly leadership meeting and help plan and assist with events and trips.  We will also have events and activities to integrate the international students into this culture and the church that you can be involved with.
  1. Youth Ministry: Our purpose is to show youth a true knowledge of God by intentionally building relationships with them. We do this in partnership with three local United Methodist churches; St. James, Tuckston and Athens First. We join with them in fellowship, worship and Bible study. Leaders are required to faithfully attend youth activities on Sunday and Wednesday nights. Many leaders will be required to lead small groups on Sunday or Wednesday night.
  1. Healing: We desire to see God move in students’ lives, particularly in the area of healing. We believe God is real, He is here, and will save, help and even heal all those who call on His name! Commitment includes a 1.5 hour weekly small group (some weeks will be teachings, others outreaches, and others healing prayer nights) that you must attend and participating in the healing rooms after Wesley on Wednesday nights. We would like for everyone to read Power Healing by John Wimber-its a great place to start learning about healing and praying for healing, also will we use several principles in teachings.
  1. Sexual Restoration, Redemption, and Healing:

The vision for this ministry is that it be one that fosters an active pursuit of the Lord and His heart regarding sex, sexual integrity, sexual healing, and purity. We desire to see purity become something attainable and exciting, rather than something seemingly impossible and burdensome. We desire to see girls develop such an appreciation of the Lord’s heart for sex that the enemy’s counterfeits don’t even seem appealing. We desire to see girls literally live out of an experiential reality of their identity in Christ, which includes a selfless purity that is completely lacking of shame. Hopefully, this ministry will provide encouragement and accountability and opportunities for growth; but, we really think that the primary way for all of this to become experiential in the lives of these women, is for everything we do within the ministry to be centered around and based up a foundational knowledge of the Word of God. Ultimately, it’s our desire that as we learn more of the Lord’s heart, our hearts will be likened to His; and that this is where the knowledge and healing will become transformational and experiential in our lives.

  1. Spanish-Speaking Ministries (for now):

We want to see Wesley´s student leaders with a heart for Latin America and the gift of Spanish speaking skills begin to utilize those tools by stepping out and intentionally forming genuine friendships with our Spanish-speaking neighbors right here in Athens. God calls us to love the strangers in our land, and we can be proactive about that by providing physical and spiritual care to this community. Using a relationship style ministry we will be assisting, befriending, and ministering the love of God to the Spanish-speaking immigrants of Athens. There will be various opportunities to get involved in from children´s ministry, healthcare, English classes, church unity, and possible music lessons. Please note, however, that these opportunities are only the beginning and are primarily a way for us to form real and impacting friendships with the people we meet.

    The basic time commitment is:

    • a weekly small group
    • 1 weekly activity serving the Latino community
    • regularly praying for this community
    • occasional group outings
