Discipleship

There are many things that come to mind when someone says “discipleship”. Without getting too far into all those things, I’d like to share about what discipleship means here at Wesley. In many places in scripture, God lets us know that His primary goal for us as individuals is that we would become more and more like His Son, Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29 and Philippians 1:6 are two such places). For this reason, we have a deep personal commitment to grow in our discipleship to Jesus. Another way to say this is that we follow Jesus in order to become like Him.

In addition to our own commitment to following Christ in this way, we also want to obey Him when He tells us to go and make disciples in Matthew 28:18-20. It is so important to us, that part of our mission statement says that we make it a priority to train believers to be disciples and equip disciples to become disciple-makers. To accomplish this goal, our students have the opportunity to meet with one of our ministry interns two or three times each month for spiritual mentoring, encouragement, prayer and teaching. This is a scheduled, semi-structured time so that the goal of Christlikeness remains in the forefront. Most of our students cherish this time and the fruit that it produces in their lives.

We see Colossian 1:28-19 to be our aim in discipleship. That we would proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, that we may present every man complete in Christ. We labor for this purpose according to His power, which mightily works within us.
